SUMMARY:Daytimers with Rabbi Fred Reiner
DESCRIPTION:A Changing World & Jewish Beliefs and Values\nIn the early days of the administration last winter\, Rabbi Reiner wrote a statement of core Jewish beliefs that was signed by over 600 Jewish clergy. The statement restated our beliefs that were challenged by the executive orders and sudden changes that were emerging daily. \nThe response was overwhelming\, and rabbis and cantors across the country used the text for study\, and many at their Passover seders. Rabbi Reiner will discuss the statement\, its genesis\, and its place with other statements of Jewish belief. \nPlease register to join us in person at Temple Sinai or via livestream. \nPlease register to join us in person at Temple Sinai or via livestream.

SUMMARY:CIESJ Presents: The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) In Troubled Times
DESCRIPTION:The IDF has faced increasing controversy over its role in the West Bank and Gaza.  While failing to protect Palestinian and Bedouin Arabs in the West Bank and those who have accompanied them for their protection\, it has also faced attacks from irate settlers. In addition\, the composition of the IDF and its leadership has undergone a transition from those from the Kibbutz to many from the nationalist religious camp. The ideals of the IDF have been challenged since October 7th and individual soldiers have been convicted of war crimes.  What does the future hold for this important Israeli institution? \nChaim Levinson is an investigative journalist for the Israeli newspaper Haaretz (Israel’s newspaper of record). He also works as an editor and hosts programs on Israeli television and radio. Born into a family of Orthodox immigrants from the United States to Israel\, he grew up in Jerusalem where he first became involved in journalism. In 2004 he began to work at Yedioth Ahronoth\, a national paper in Israel\, and in 2008 moved to Haaretz where he uncovered various governmental improprieties. Currently much of his work involves covering the West Bank Settlers. \n  \nRegister to join via Zoom \n  \n\nIn 2023\, Temple Sinai established the Committee for Israel Engagement and Social Justice (CIESJ) to grow Temple Sinai’s engagement in issues concerning Israel\, to support Israel’s as it strives to achieve its ideals as a Jewish and democratic State\, and to work with the wider Jewish community to achieve these objectives. Learn more.

SUMMARY:Daytimers with Senior Diplomat G. Jonathan Greenwald

There will be time for questions and comments following his presentation. \nJonathan (Jon) Greenwald\, a Wilkes-Barre\, PA native\, has spent half a century in public service\, including 30 years as a senior U.S. diplomat and 17 years as Vice President for the International Crisis Group\, a prominent non-governmental conflict resolution organization. SUMMARY:CIESJ Presents: The Attack on Civil Liberties in Israel
DESCRIPTION:A year before October 7th\, the Netanyahu government launched an unprecedented attack on Israel’s judicial system—and with it\, an assault on civil liberties. This radical overhaul was widely condemned by Israelis across the political spectrum and sparked weekly mass protests involving hundreds of thousands of citizens. \nToday\, this struggle continues as the government intensifies its aggressive campaign against civil society organizations and openly challenges judicial\, security\, and even military leadership. The crisis has escalated\, leading to continued protests and public strikes. Israelis are taking to the streets to demand action on multiple fronts: the release of hostages\, an end to the prolonged war\, and a solution to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. \nRegister to Join via Zoom \n\nNoa Sattath serves as Executive Director of ACRI (the Association for Civil Rights in Israel)\, Israel’s equivalent of the American Civil Liberties Union. Since November 2021\, she has led the organization through its most challenging period\, confronting both the government’s judicial overhaul and unprecedented human rights violations following October 7th. \nUnder her leadership\, ACRI has fought pivotal legal battles through High Court petitions that curb government overreach\, protect prisoners’ rights\, defend freedom of expression\, and challenge abuses of power by authorities. \nAn ordained Reform Rabbi\, Noa previously led the Israel Religious Action Center (IRAC)\, the Jerusalem Open House for Pride and Tolerance where she helped organize Jerusalem’s first Pride March\, and MEET\, a technology-focused organization affiliated with MIT that develops joint leadership programs for young Israelis and Palestinians. \n  \nIn 2023\, Temple Sinai established the Committee for Israel Engagement and Social Justice (CIESJ) to grow Temple Sinai’s engagement in issues concerning Israel\, to support Israel’s as it strives to achieve its ideals as a Jewish and democratic State\, and to work with the wider Jewish community to achieve these objectives. SUMMARY:CIESJ Presents: Israeli Public Opinion and Peace - Impediment or Excuse?
DESCRIPTION:While there is at least a tenuous ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war and the living hostages have been returned home\, constructing the foundation of a more durable peace remains far off. One impediment has been the much deeper issue of the Israeli public’s acceptance of a permanent occupation of the territories and the denial of self-determination for Palestinians. There is a stark disconnect between Israelis’ wish to preserve their democracy and the threat that a continuing occupation represents to that very democracy. How immutable is that sentiment? Is it amenable to change that would lead to an end of the conflict? And given that American Jewish public opinion strongly supports Palestinian self-determination\, what does that mean for the relationship between American Jews and Israel? Two experts in these issues will address how to move the needle in getting Israeli and American Jewish public opinion to align in supporting a long-term resolution of the conflict. \nThis is an in-person only event. A reception will follow the discussion. \nRegister \n  \nDahlia Scheindlin is a public opinion expert and international political and strategic consultant based in Tel Aviv. She is recognized for her contributions to discussions on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict; the peace process; and issues of democracy\, human rights\, and social justice. She conducts public opinion research related to the Israeli Palestinian conflict\, including the Palestinian-Israeli Pulse survey\, an ongoing project. She is a regular columnist at Haaretz newspaper (English)\, focusing on the Israel-Palestinian conflict\, Israeli politics\, and foreign affairs.  For fall\, 2025\, she is a Penn Global Middle East Distinguished Visiting Scholar at the University of Pennsylvania. \nJeremy Ben-Ami is the founder and President of J Street\, the home of pro-Israel\, pro-peace and pro-democracy Americans.  His family roots go back 140 years in Israel\, including the founding of Tel Aviv.  Prior to founding J Street\, Jeremy had extensive experience in U.S. national politics and public policy\, including work in several political campaigns and in the Clinton White House. \n  \n\n\nIn 2023\, Temple Sinai established the Committee for Israel Engagement and Social Justice (CIESJ) to grow Temple Sinai’s engagement in issues concerning Israel\, to support Israel’s as it strives to achieve its ideals as a Jewish and democratic State\, and to work with the wider Jewish community to achieve these objectives. Learn more.
