SUMMARY:CIESJ Book Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Join Congregation Ramot Shalom of Be’er Shevah and Temple Sinai of DC for a virtual book discussion of The Hilltop by Assaf Gavron. This book should open up a very intense and significant conversation about issues in contemporary Israel. \nRegister to join via Zoom \n  \nA sprawling\, daring novel\, which dismantles the extreme and absurd reality in the Israeli-occupied West Bank: Catch 22 meets 21st century Israel. Violence\, greed\, lust for power and the blurring of values\, but also a burning ideological passion. As always\, Gavron charts a path between styles and genres\, between realism and satire\, between being earnest and wildly funny. Gavron wrote parts of The Hilltop in a cabin in a settlement in the West Bank.

SUMMARY:CIESJ Book Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Temple Sinai’s Committee for Israel Engagement and Social Justice hosts a virtual discussion of of Red Hook Road by American Jewish Author Ayelet Waldman\, along with our partner congregation\, Congregation Ramot Shalom of Be’er Shevah. \nRegister to join via Zoom \n  \nRED HOOK ROAD \nA rich and rewarding story of love\, loss\, and the power of family from the bestselling author of Bad Mother and Love and Other Impossible Pursuits. In the aftermath of a devastating wedding day\, two families\, the Tetherlys and the Copakens\, find their lives unraveled by unthinkable loss. Over the course of the next four summers in Red Hook\, Maine\, they struggle to bridge differences of class and background to honor the memory of the couple\, Becca and John. As Waldman explores the unique and personal ways in which each character responds to the tragedy—from the budding romance between the two surviving children\, Ruthie and Matt\, to the struggling marriage between Iris\, a high strung professor in New York\, and her husband Daniel—she creates a powerful family portrait and a beautiful reminder of the joys of life. Elegantly written and emotionally gripping\, Red Hook Road affirms Waldman’s place among today’s most talented authors. \n

DESCRIPTION:Temple Sinai’s Committee for Israel and Social Justice is pleased to invite you to an evening with Maj. Gen. (ret.) Nimrod Sheffer\, one of Israel’s most respected military strategists. Sheffer will be in conversation with Natan Guttman\, Washington correspondent for Kan public television and columnist for Moment Magazine. \nDrawing on decades of senior military leadership\, Sheffer will offer a clear-eyed assessment of Israel’s legitimate security needs and the realities it must confront. SUMMARY:CIESJ Presents: Israeli Public Opinion and Peace - Impediment or Excuse?
DESCRIPTION:While there is at least a tenuous ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war and the living hostages have been returned home\, constructing the foundation of a more durable peace remains far off. One impediment has been the much deeper issue of the Israeli public’s acceptance of a permanent occupation of the territories and the denial of self-determination for Palestinians. There is a stark disconnect between Israelis’ wish to preserve their democracy and the threat that a continuing occupation represents to that very democracy. How immutable is that sentiment? Is it amenable to change that would lead to an end of the conflict? And given that American Jewish public opinion strongly supports Palestinian self-determination\, what does that mean for the relationship between American Jews and Israel? Two experts in these issues will address how to move the needle in getting Israeli and American Jewish public opinion to align in supporting a long-term resolution of the conflict. \nThis is an in-person only event. A reception will follow the discussion. \nRegister \n  \nDahlia Scheindlin is a public opinion expert and international political and strategic consultant based in Tel Aviv. She is recognized for her contributions to discussions on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict; the peace process; and issues of democracy\, human rights\, and social justice. She conducts public opinion research related to the Israeli Palestinian conflict\, including the Palestinian-Israeli Pulse survey\, an ongoing project. She is a regular columnist at Haaretz newspaper (English)\, focusing on the Israel-Palestinian conflict\, Israeli politics\, and foreign affairs.  For fall\, 2025\, she is a Penn Global Middle East Distinguished Visiting Scholar at the University of Pennsylvania. \nJeremy Ben-Ami is the founder and President of J Street\, the home of pro-Israel\, pro-peace and pro-democracy Americans.  His family roots go back 140 years in Israel\, including the founding of Tel Aviv.  Prior to founding J Street\, Jeremy had extensive experience in U.S. national politics and public policy\, including work in several political campaigns and in the Clinton White House. \n  \n\n\nIn 2023\, Temple Sinai established the Committee for Israel Engagement and Social Justice (CIESJ) to grow Temple Sinai’s engagement in issues concerning Israel\, to support Israel’s as it strives to achieve its ideals as a Jewish and democratic State\, and to work with the wider Jewish community to achieve these objectives. Learn more.

SUMMARY:CIESJ Presents: The Attack on Civil Liberties in Israel
DESCRIPTION:A year before October 7th\, the Netanyahu government launched an unprecedented attack on Israel’s judicial system—and with it\, an assault on civil liberties. This radical overhaul was widely condemned by Israelis across the political spectrum and sparked weekly mass protests involving hundreds of thousands of citizens. \nToday\, this struggle continues as the government intensifies its aggressive campaign against civil society organizations and openly challenges judicial\, security\, and even military leadership. The crisis has escalated\, leading to continued protests and public strikes. Israelis are taking to the streets to demand action on multiple fronts: the release of hostages\, an end to the prolonged war\, and a solution to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. \nRegister to Join via Zoom \n\nNoa Sattath serves as Executive Director of ACRI (the Association for Civil Rights in Israel)\, Israel’s equivalent of the American Civil Liberties Union. Since November 2021\, she has led the organization through its most challenging period\, confronting both the government’s judicial overhaul and unprecedented human rights violations following October 7th. \nUnder her leadership\, ACRI has fought pivotal legal battles through High Court petitions that curb government overreach\, protect prisoners’ rights\, defend freedom of expression\, and challenge abuses of power by authorities. \nAn ordained Reform Rabbi\, Noa previously led the Israel Religious Action Center (IRAC)\, the Jerusalem Open House for Pride and Tolerance where she helped organize Jerusalem’s first Pride March\, and MEET\, a technology-focused organization affiliated with MIT that develops joint leadership programs for young Israelis and Palestinians. \n  \nIn 2023\, Temple Sinai established the Committee for Israel Engagement and Social Justice (CIESJ) to grow Temple Sinai’s engagement in issues concerning Israel\, to support Israel’s as it strives to achieve its ideals as a Jewish and democratic State\, and to work with the wider Jewish community to achieve these objectives. SUMMARY:CIESJ Presents: The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) In Troubled Times
DESCRIPTION:The IDF has faced increasing controversy over its role in the West Bank and Gaza.  While failing to protect Palestinian and Bedouin Arabs in the West Bank and those who have accompanied them for their protection\, it has also faced attacks from irate settlers. In addition\, the composition of the IDF and its leadership has undergone a transition from those from the Kibbutz to many from the nationalist religious camp. The ideals of the IDF have been challenged since October 7th and individual soldiers have been convicted of war crimes.  What does the future hold for this important Israeli institution? \nChaim Levinson is an investigative journalist for the Israeli newspaper Haaretz (Israel’s newspaper of record). He also works as an editor and hosts programs on Israeli television and radio. Born into a family of Orthodox immigrants from the United States to Israel\, he grew up in Jerusalem where he first became involved in journalism. In 2004 he began to work at Yedioth Ahronoth\, a national paper in Israel\, and in 2008 moved to Haaretz where he uncovered various governmental improprieties. Currently much of his work involves covering the West Bank Settlers. \n  \nRegister to join via Zoom \n  \n\nIn 2023\, Temple Sinai established the Committee for Israel Engagement and Social Justice (CIESJ) to grow Temple Sinai’s engagement in issues concerning Israel\, to support Israel’s as it strives to achieve its ideals as a Jewish and democratic State\, and to work with the wider Jewish community to achieve these objectives. Learn more.

SUMMARY:CIESJ Presents: The Use and Misuse of "Antisemitism"
DESCRIPTION:How To Protect Jews Without Sacrificing Our Freedoms\nOver the past several months\, major Jewish organizations have become increasingly alarmed that the important cause of fighting antisemitism has been misappropriated by the federal government to undermine our liberal democratic society — civil rights\, free speech\, inclusive society – as well as attacking higher education. This authoritarianism\, when combined with its white supremacy\, invariably leads to discrimination against women and minorities\, including Jews. \nOur distinguished panel will discuss the key aspects of defining what is and is not antisemitism\, including its use in dealing with anti-Israel protests on college campuses\, elimination of DEI programs and offices of civil rights\, and cancelling funding for universities. \nOur panel includes Rabbi David Saperstein\, former Director of the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism and former U.S. Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom; Judith Lichtman\, attorney\, life-long leader in advocating for women’s rights\, and a founder of Emily’s List; and Arno Rosenfeld\, an enterprise reporter for The Forward with a focus on antisemitism and its relationship to activism against Israel. \n\n\n A reception will follow for in-person attendees. Livestream information will be sent via confirmation email. \nRegister

SUMMARY:CIESJ Program with Prof. Ilai Saltzman
DESCRIPTION:The Undoing Of Israel:  Internal Threats To Israel’s Democracy And Social Cohesion\nProf. Ilai Saltzman\, Director\, Gildenhorn Institute For Israel Studies\, University Of Maryland\n\n\nAt Israel’s founding in 1948\, its founders envisioned a country defined by humanist values and adherence to international law.  Its Declaration of Independence asserted that the state will “ensure complete equality of social and political rights to all its inhabitants irrespective of religion\, race\, or sex.”  But that ideal has always been challenged by the need to protect its Jewish identity\, which has resulted in discrimination against its Arab minority as well as the oppression built into maintaining the occupied territories. \n\n\nOver the decades\, this inherent contradiction has surfaced again and again\, creating political upheavals without ever resolving the contradiction.  Now\, the war in Gaza and the continuing attacks on its judicial system have brought Israel to a breaking point. \n\n\nThis talk will explore Israel’s trajectory toward increasing illiberalism and potential fragmentation that threatens its foundational humanist values as well as offer reforms that could potentially lead to a healing of its divisions. \n\n\nDr. Ilai Saltzman is an Associate Research Professor of Israel Studies\, and the Director of the Gildenhorn Institute for Israel Studies at the University of Maryland\, College Park. His scholarship and teaching are focused on international security\, Israeli foreign and security policy\, US foreign policy\, and political psychology. He has written numerous scholarly articles and book chapters\, and commentaries in the Los Angeles Times\, Ha’aretz\, The Jerusalem Post\, and other prominent outlets. \n\n\nThis program will be recorded but not livestreamed.  A reception will follow. \nRegister

Read a little bit about this contemporary novel classified as literature\, sci-fi\, fantasy\, and sometimes even horror. \nWho will rule the holy land\, and at what cost?\nIn a near-future Jerusalem\, harrowing omens plague the city: a desecrated altar\, an unbearable stench\, a rampant famine. Shaken but devout\, Jonathan\, the royal family’s third son\, continues to hold services and offer animal sacrifices at the prophesied Third Temple\, built to consecrate the founding of the new Kingdom of Judah. His father\, Israel’s self-appointed king\, has abolished the Supreme Court. The Torah is the law of the land\, and only people of the Jewish faith are allowed in. When war breaks out and an angel of God begins to torment Jonathan\, warning him of his father’s sacrilege\, the foundations of the young priest’s faith—and then his world—begin to give way. \nWinner of the prestigious Bernstein Prize\, The Third Temple plunges readers into a tempest of fanaticism\, betrayal\, and destruction. Where does the power of man end and the power of God begin?\nWith chilling resonance\, this vivid novel from one of Israel’s leading authors sounds an unforgettable warning amidst rising extremism.\nTranslated by YARDENNE GREENSPAN \nRegister to Join via Zoom\n \nQuestions? SUMMARY:Tovanot: Rejecting the Binary\, Embracing Dual Narratives
DESCRIPTION:A Nuanced Understanding of Israel/Palestine; led by guest Israel educator Ruti Kadish\nSince October 7th\, 2023\, so many people have had conversations they don’t necessarily feel equipped to handle or are hesitant to engage\, at a loss for words\, or confused about what to believe. Others find themselves at painful odds with friends and family and feel forced to choose a side. \nIn this series — Tovanot: Rejecting the Binary\, Embracing Dual Narratives — we will take a deep dive into the most complex questions related to Israel/Palestine. Using a dual-narrative approach to understanding the historical and political landscape in Israel\, Tovanot rejects binary thinking and encourages a rigorous and sober exploration of Zionist history and our connection to the Jewish homeland alongside concern and empathy for Palestinian lives and narratives and their connection to their homeland. Taking inspiration from long-standing shared society and coexistence initiatives in Israel and Palestine\, we will practice having courageous conversations and gain tools to hold nuance and multiple narratives of Israeli Jews\, Palestinian citizens of Israel\, and Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank. \nRegister ($36) \nRuti Kadish was born in Israel\, where she spent most of her childhood. After completing her military service\, Ruti left Israel to study in the United States. She received a BA in Women’s Studies and a PhD in Near Eastern Studies from UC Berkeley. Before a postdoc in Israel Studies at the University of Maryland\, College Park\, Ruti was a Fellow at the Mandel School for Educational Leadership in Jerusalem\, where she designed progressive Israel curricula for informal Jewish education. Through the early aughts\, Ruti worked as a consultant in diversity education\, primarily assisting primary schools in becoming more welcoming environments for all different kinds of families\, including LGBT-headed families. For much of the past 15 years\, Ruti has worked in the Jewish not-for-profit sector in education and resource development.
