SUMMARY:CIESJ Presents: Israeli Public Opinion and Peace - Impediment or Excuse?
DESCRIPTION:While there is at least a tenuous ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war and the living hostages have been returned home\, constructing the foundation of a more durable peace remains far off. One impediment has been the much deeper issue of the Israeli public’s acceptance of a permanent occupation of the territories and the denial of self-determination for Palestinians. There is a stark disconnect between Israelis’ wish to preserve their democracy and the threat that a continuing occupation represents to that very democracy. How immutable is that sentiment? Is it amenable to change that would lead to an end of the conflict? And given that American Jewish public opinion strongly supports Palestinian self-determination\, what does that mean for the relationship between American Jews and Israel? Two experts in these issues will address how to move the needle in getting Israeli and American Jewish public opinion to align in supporting a long-term resolution of the conflict. \nThis is an in-person only event. A reception will follow the discussion. \nRegister \n  \nDahlia Scheindlin is a public opinion expert and international political and strategic consultant based in Tel Aviv. She is recognized for her contributions to discussions on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict; the peace process; and issues of democracy\, human rights\, and social justice. She conducts public opinion research related to the Israeli Palestinian conflict\, including the Palestinian-Israeli Pulse survey\, an ongoing project. She is a regular columnist at Haaretz newspaper (English)\, focusing on the Israel-Palestinian conflict\, Israeli politics\, and foreign affairs.  For fall\, 2025\, she is a Penn Global Middle East Distinguished Visiting Scholar at the University of Pennsylvania. \nJeremy Ben-Ami is the founder and President of J Street\, the home of pro-Israel\, pro-peace and pro-democracy Americans.  His family roots go back 140 years in Israel\, including the founding of Tel Aviv.  Prior to founding J Street\, Jeremy had extensive experience in U.S. national politics and public policy\, including work in several political campaigns and in the Clinton White House. \n  \n\n\nIn 2023\, Temple Sinai established the Committee for Israel Engagement and Social Justice (CIESJ) to grow Temple Sinai’s engagement in issues concerning Israel\, to support Israel’s as it strives to achieve its ideals as a Jewish and democratic State\, and to work with the wider Jewish community to achieve these objectives. Learn more.

SUMMARY:CIESJ Presents: Israel at a Crossroads: A Conversation on Security & Peace
DESCRIPTION:Temple Sinai’s Committee for Israel and Social Justice is pleased to invite you to an evening with Maj. Gen. (ret.) Nimrod Sheffer\, one of Israel’s most respected military strategists. Sheffer will be in conversation with Natan Guttman\, Washington correspondent for Kan public television and columnist for Moment Magazine. \nDrawing on decades of senior military leadership\, Sheffer will offer a clear-eyed assessment of Israel’s legitimate security needs and the realities it must confront. At the same time\, he will present a hopeful\, pragmatic vision for a future of peace\, grounded in his belief that a two-state solution remains necessary and achievable. The conversation will explore concrete strategies for advancing security alongside diplomacy\, rebuilding trust\, strengthening Israel’s democracy\, and charting a path toward a safer\, more just future for Israelis and Palestinians alike. \nMaj. Gen. (ret.) Nimrod Sheffer has devoted more than 45 years to the security of the State of Israel. Rising through the ranks of the Israeli Air Force\, he later served as Deputy Commander of the Air Force. His final role in the IDF was as Head of the Planning Directorate of the General Staff\, overseeing political-strategic military planning\, international military cooperation\, and long-term force development. Following his retirement from active duty\, Sheffer was appointed President and CEO of Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI). Alongside his career\, Sheffer has long been engaged in civic and social efforts\, including partnership initiatives with Bedouin communities in the Negev to foster opportunity\, leadership\, and shared citizenship. \nRegister \nThis is an in-person only event. A reception will follow the discussion. \nThe event is co-sponsored by J Street\, New Israel Fund\, New Jewish Narrative\, and UnXeptable.

SUMMARY:Tu BiSh'vat Seder

Cantor Rhodes will lead a Tu BiSh’vat Seder followed by a vegetarian potluck dinner and an opportunity to hear from guest speaker Mike Tidwell\, Executive Director\, Chesapeake Climate Action Network. \n6:00 to 6:30: 30-minute Seder led by Cantor Rhodes \nTu B’Shvat is the Jewish “New Year for Trees.” This holiday celebrates nature’s beauty\, calls us to our responsibility to care for the earth\, and open the journey into our own spiritual growth. During the seder\, we eat symbolic fruits and nuts\, each representing aspects of the natural and spiritual world: fruits with inedible peels (protection and physicality)\, fruits with edible peels (balance of inner and outer worlds)\, nuts (spiritual potential)\, and dried fruits (wisdom and life’s cycles). We offer blessings of gratitude for the earth’s abundance\, reflecting on our connection to creation and our duty to nurture it. As we share this meal\, we renew our appreciation for nature’s gifts and commit to planting seeds of kindness\, growth\, and environmental stewardship. \n6:30 to 7:00: Potluck dinner \nAttendees are asked to bring a vegetarian side dish or dessert\, according to the first letter of the attendee’s last name. (A-P bring side dish; Q-Z bring dessert) \n7:00 to 7:30: Guest speaker\, Mike Tidwell\, Executive Director\, Chesapeake Climate Action Network \nTidwell is a journalist\, author\, and climate activist living in Takoma Park\, MD. SUMMARY:CIESJ Book Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Temple Sinai’s Committee for Israel Engagement and Social Justice hosts a virtual discussion of of Red Hook Road by American Jewish Author Ayelet Waldman\, along with our partner congregation\, Congregation Ramot Shalom of Be’er Shevah. \nRegister to join via Zoom \n  \nRED HOOK ROAD \nA rich and rewarding story of love\, loss\, and the power of family from the bestselling author of Bad Mother and Love and Other Impossible Pursuits. In the aftermath of a devastating wedding day\, two families\, the Tetherlys and the Copakens\, find their lives unraveled by unthinkable loss. Over the course of the next four summers in Red Hook\, Maine\, they struggle to bridge differences of class and background to honor the memory of the couple\, Becca and John. As Waldman explores the unique and personal ways in which each character responds to the tragedy—from the budding romance between the two surviving children\, Ruthie and Matt\, to the struggling marriage between Iris\, a high strung professor in New York\, and her husband Daniel—she creates a powerful family portrait and a beautiful reminder of the joys of life. Elegantly written and emotionally gripping\, Red Hook Road affirms Waldman’s place among today’s most talented authors. \n

SUMMARY:CIESJ Book Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Join Congregation Ramot Shalom of Be’er Shevah and Temple Sinai of DC for a virtual book discussion of The Hilltop by Assaf Gavron. This book should open up a very intense and significant conversation about issues in contemporary Israel. \nRegister to join via Zoom \n  \nA sprawling\, daring novel\, which dismantles the extreme and absurd reality in the Israeli-occupied West Bank: Catch 22 meets 21st century Israel. Violence\, greed\, lust for power and the blurring of values\, but also a burning ideological passion. As always\, Gavron charts a path between styles and genres\, between realism and satire\, between being earnest and wildly funny. Gavron wrote parts of The Hilltop in a cabin in a settlement in the West Bank.
