SUMMARY:TSMRJ Book Discussion
DESCRIPTION:The Brotherhood will host a discussion of Moses\, Man of the Mountain  by Zora Neale Hurston at the temple.  As a prequel for Passover\, we will discuss Hurston’s take on the story of Exodus\, blending “the Moses of the Old Testament with the Moses of black folklore and song to create a compelling allegory of power\, redemption\, and faith.”  Copies are available as ebooks only from the Montgomery County Library\, while the DC system has several hard copies available.  To RSVP or for questions\, contact Howard Oppenheim.

SUMMARY:Daytimers with Robert Lieber
DESCRIPTION:United States Foreign Policy In Turbulent Times \nGuest Speaker Robert Lieber\, PhD\, Professor Emeritus of Government and International Affairs\, Georgetown University \nAmerica’s relations with allies and adversaries have displayed a dizzying series of changes. Longtime solidarity with European allies that had been a fixture of the US world role since the creation of NATO has been questioned\, and relations with Asian allies are only slightly less troubled. A rearmed Russia and an increasingly powerful China pose strategic threats\, yet the Trump administration’s policies have been ambivalent toward Moscow and seem to alternate between cooperation and conflict with Beijing. Despite a transactional approach to friends and foes\, the reality is that not only are US national security and vital interests at stake\, but also our values. \nRobert Lieber is Emeritus Professor of Government and International Affairs at Georgetown University\, where he previously served as Chair of the Government Department and interim chair of Psychology. He is author or editor of eighteen books on international relations and U.S. foreign policy\, and his essays and op-eds have appeared in journals and newspapers in the U.S.\, Europe\, and Israel. He also has served as an advisor to several presidential campaigns\, to the State Department\, and to the drafters of U.S. National Intelligence Estimates. His most recent book is INDISPENSABLE NATION: AMERICAN FOREIGN POLICY IN A TURBULENT WORLD (Yale University Press). \nJoin the Temple Sinai DayTimers for a Zoom program to learn more about United States foreign policy. There will be adequate time for questions\, comments\, and discussion following the presentation. \nRegister to join via Zoom

SUMMARY:Shabbat Shira 2026: Open the Door
DESCRIPTION:Cantors Mann and Rhodes. Photo by Steve Snyder. \nOpen the Door\nAnd Light the Way with Song\nLet music and prayer open the door to our hearts and light the way – to love\, faith\, hope and courage. This year’s special music Shabbat features the compositions of guest musician Cantor Becky Mann\, who joins our temple’s clergy\, choir\, and a professional string quartet to fill our sanctuary with song. The evening promises to enliven\, encourage\, comfort\, and inspire us as we worship and sing together. \nServices will be preceded by an oneg and followed by a buffet dinner (sold out).  \n  \nClick here for livestream \nJoin the 2026 Circle of Music Lovers\, a community of members and friends committed to Temple Sinai’s diverse\, high-quality musical programs. All contributions go to the Music Fund\, which supports all aspects of our congregation’s musical life. We are deeply grateful to all our Circle of Music Lovers donors! \n  \n\nAn Interview with Cantor Becky Mann\nMusic Committee member Kent Allen had a chance to talk with Cantor Mann about this year’s special Shabbat Shira. \nFor composer and cantor Becky Mann\, tradition is important\, but context is key. While the words in the Talmud may remain unchanged\, the world never stops evolving. Mann’s task: Finding the words in our modern-day lexicon to relate the lessons and tales of the past to the present. Read more.

SUMMARY:Tu BiSh'vat Seder
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Tu BiSh’vat\, the Jewish “New Year for Trees\,” with a meaningful evening honoring nature and spiritual growth. Cantor Rhodes will lead a Tu BiSh’vat Seder followed by a vegetarian potluck dinner and an opportunity to hear from guest speaker Mike Tidwell\, Executive Director\, Chesapeake Climate Action Network. \n6:00 to 6:30: 30-minute Seder led by Cantor Rhodes \nTu B’Shvat is the Jewish “New Year for Trees.” This holiday celebrates nature’s beauty\, calls us to our responsibility to care for the earth\, and open the journey into our own spiritual growth. During the seder\, we eat symbolic fruits and nuts\, each representing aspects of the natural and spiritual world: fruits with inedible peels (protection and physicality)\, fruits with edible peels (balance of inner and outer worlds)\, nuts (spiritual potential)\, and dried fruits (wisdom and life’s cycles). We offer blessings of gratitude for the earth’s abundance\, reflecting on our connection to creation and our duty to nurture it. As we share this meal\, we renew our appreciation for nature’s gifts and commit to planting seeds of kindness\, growth\, and environmental stewardship. \n6:30 to 7:00: Potluck dinner \nAttendees are asked to bring a vegetarian side dish or dessert\, according to the first letter of the attendee’s last name. (A-P bring side dish; Q-Z bring dessert) \n7:00 to 7:30: Guest speaker\, Mike Tidwell\, Executive Director\, Chesapeake Climate Action Network \nTidwell is a journalist\, author\, and climate activist living in Takoma Park\, MD. His most recent book is an exploration of global warming’s impact in his own front yard\, called The Lost Trees of Willow Avenue: A story of Climate and Hope on One American Street (St. Martin’s Press\, March 2025). \nPlease register in advance

DESCRIPTION:Temple Sinai’s Committee for Israel and Social Justice is pleased to invite you to an evening with Maj. Gen. (ret.) Nimrod Sheffer\, one of Israel’s most respected military strategists. Sheffer will be in conversation with Natan Guttman\, Washington correspondent for Kan public television and columnist for Moment Magazine. \nDrawing on decades of senior military leadership\, Sheffer will offer a clear-eyed assessment of Israel’s legitimate security needs and the realities it must confront.
