SUMMARY:YAWS Meeting
DESCRIPTION:We are a group of parents of young adults and teens who are struggling with life. Examples of such difficulties might be: isolation\, social difficulties\, school avoidance\, school failure or other learning differences\, vocational struggles\, inhibitions around launching and independence or strained relations with friends and family. Many struggle with mental illness\, learning disabilities\, Asperger’s\, substance abuse or autism. Some are undiagnosed\, just not living up to society’s expectations. \n\n\nWe meet once a month and support and encourage one another as we look at strategies for helping our young adults. We understand the journey\, which has many twists and turns\, often not what we expected when thinking about raising a child. We laugh\, cry\, share resources\, and support one another. Occasionally\, we have speakers join us and supplement our knowledge of resources available\, including housing options\, legal remedies\, new medications or treatments\, etc. \n\nThe group meets monthly and is open to anyone interested. All information shared is completely confidential. Should you have any questions\, please call the Temple Sinai office at (202) 363-6394.

She is also the author of Here All Along: Finding Meaning\, Spirituality\, and a Deeper Connection to Life–in Judaism (After Finally Choosing to Look There). \nNo registration is required for the Shabbat Service at 6:30 pm\, but please register for the dinner that will follow and an opportunity to hear from Sarah about what it means to be Jewish during a time of rising antisemitism and how Jews can live proudly\, boldly\, and joyfully. \nSchedule \n\n6:30-7:15 pm: Shabbat Service. Watch the livestream\n7:15-7:45 pm: Dinner (registration required below)\n7:45-8:45 pm: Sarah Hurwitz and Rabbi Roos in Conversation (Q&A with Sarah to follow; no livestream or recording at the author’s request. Registration required below)\n\n  \nThis program is supported by the Rabbi Mindy Portnoy Adult Education Fund in memory of Temple Sinai Rabbi Emerita\, Mindy Portnoy. \nThe Rabbi Mindy Portnoy Adult Education Fund was established by a resolution of the Temple Sinai Board of Trustees to memorialize the impact Rabbi Portnoy had on the Temple Sinai community and her legacy of continuing Jewish education for adults. The fund focuses on providing financial support for educational programming primarily targeted members above the age of 18. This evening’s program was made possible thanks to the generosity of Portnoy Fund donors–if you would like to support additional programs such as this\, please consider making a donation to the Portnoy Fund online or by mailing a donation to Temple Sinai.

SUMMARY:Refugee Shabbat Service
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Refugee Shabbat where we will honor refugees\, asylum seekers\, and displaced people. At this time when immigrants are being targeted\, we will learn from other communities who have stood up with their neighbors in order to educate and mobilize our local community. We will welcome Rabbi Jill Avrin\, Director of Campus Affairs at the Jewish Community Relations Council of Minnesota and the Dakotas. \nRabbi Avrin’s work addressing the ICE surge in Minnesota has included organizing and attending interfaith gatherings and vigils\, protesting\, advocacy\, education\, and mutual aid efforts. She helped host the 700 clergy who came to Minnesota in January with MARCH\, including national leaders from the Reform movement. She has been protesting at the Whipple building where detainees are still being held\, as well as at her local suburban protests. Rabbi Avrin has always centered social justice as a primary part of her portfolio as a rabbi. She was co-chair of the Minnesota Rabbinical Association in 2020\, when George Floyd was murdered\, and helped organize the Minnesota Jewish community’s united response at that time. In recent months\, she has taken a lead role in addressing Operation Metro Surge through her work at JCRC and YourJewish. \nClick here for livestream.  \nServices are preceded by an oneg beginning at 6:00 pm featuring food from Emma’s Torch\, a local organization that equips refugees with the skills and confidence to create meaningful careers in the food industry through their culinary training programs. John Odenwelder\, Executive Director of Washington English Center\, our tzedakah recipient for the month of March\, also plans to attend the Oneg. \n***Poster supplies will be available at the Oneg for those who want to make a poster for the No Kings Rally on Saturday\, March 28.  Learn more here

SUMMARY:Multiracial Sinai Kehillat Shabbat Service
DESCRIPTION:Are we as welcoming as we believe ourselves to be? \nOn the yahrzeit of Martin Luther King Jr.\, Temple Sinai’s Multiracial Sinai Committee invites you to join us for a Shabbat of reflection\, music\, and honest conversation. \nWe are honored to welcome Rabbi Isaama Goldstein-Stoll\, who grew up at Temple Sinai and now serves as a national URJ leader committed to affirming and celebrating Jewish diversity. Rabbi Isaama will offer the d’var Torah\, inviting us to consider how we create space for Jews of color and multiracial Jewish families—and where we may still have room to grow. \nThis year\, MRS partners with Kehillat Shabbat\, Temple Sinai’s lay-led twice-monthly Shabbat minyan. Music will be led by Anita Stoll\, featuring melodies that reflect the rich cultural diversity of the Jewish people\, reminding us that Jewish identity has always spanned continents\, languages\, and lived experiences. \nDr. King’s legacy challenges communities of faith not only to speak about justice\, but to embody it. On this Shabbat during Pesach\, as we celebrate the “mixed multitude” marching from Egyptian bondage\, we strive to look inward with courage and outward with compassion as we continue shaping a synagogue grounded in belonging. \nA Kosher-for-Passover lunch will follow\, offering time for connection and conversation around the table. Please RSVP to help us plan.  \nAll are welcome as we continue working toward a community where everyone can feel at home. \nClick here for livestream
