SUMMARY:Daytimers with Elizabeth Prelinger
DESCRIPTION:The Exhibition of Degenerate Art\, Munich 1937: Lessons for Today\nTemple member Elizabeth Prelinger will present a 45-minute slide and video lecture on the “Degenerate Art Exhibition\,” which was first shown in Munich in 1937 before traveling around Germany. Organized by the propaganda wing of the Nazi party\, the show looted the best works of modern art of the era from museums and private collections\, labeling them as the creations of the mentally ill\, Bolsheviks\, and Jews. Liberal directors who had enriched Germany’s museums with these pieces were fired from their positions. The show marked an important stage in the Fascist claws on all means of cultural production in order to subjugate and manipulate the hearts and minds of the people. And this was just the beginning. \nSound familiar? \nThis is a hybrid program. Register to join in person or virtually. \n\nElizabeth Prelinger is Keyser Family Professor of Art History Emerita from Georgetown University. She has published and curated exhibitions on such artists as Edvard Munch\, Käthe Kollwitz\, and Paul Gauguin. Liz and her husband Steve Messner have been members of Temple Sinai for almost thirty years and their grandson has just started at the Nursery School.

DESCRIPTION:Temple Sinai’s Committee for Israel and Social Justice is pleased to invite you to an evening with Maj. Gen. (ret.) Nimrod Sheffer\, one of Israel’s most respected military strategists. Sheffer will be in conversation with Natan Guttman\, Washington correspondent for Kan public television and columnist for Moment Magazine. \nDrawing on decades of senior military leadership\, Sheffer will offer a clear-eyed assessment of Israel’s legitimate security needs and the realities it must confront. At the same time\, he will present a hopeful\, pragmatic vision for a future of peace\, grounded in his belief that a two-state solution remains necessary and achievable. The conversation will explore concrete strategies for advancing security alongside diplomacy\, rebuilding trust\, strengthening Israel’s democracy\, and charting a path toward a safer\, more just future for Israelis and Palestinians alike. \nMaj. Gen. (ret.) Nimrod Sheffer has devoted more than 45 years to the security of the State of Israel. Cantor Rhodes will lead a Tu BiSh’vat Seder followed by a vegetarian potluck dinner and an opportunity to hear from guest speaker Mike Tidwell\, Executive Director\, Chesapeake Climate Action Network. \n6:00 to 6:30: 30-minute Seder led by Cantor Rhodes \nTu B’Shvat is the Jewish “New Year for Trees.” This holiday celebrates nature’s beauty\, calls us to our responsibility to care for the earth\, and open the journey into our own spiritual growth. We offer blessings of gratitude for the earth’s abundance\, reflecting on our connection to creation and our duty to nurture it. As we share this meal\, we renew our appreciation for nature’s gifts and commit to planting seeds of kindness\, growth\, and environmental stewardship. \n6:30 to 7:00: Potluck dinner \nAttendees are asked to bring a vegetarian side dish or dessert\, according to the first letter of the attendee’s last name. SUMMARY:CIESJ Book Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Temple Sinai’s Committee for Israel Engagement and Social Justice hosts a virtual discussion of of Red Hook Road by American Jewish Author Ayelet Waldman\, along with our partner congregation\, Congregation Ramot Shalom of Be’er Shevah. \nRegister to join via Zoom \n  \nRED HOOK ROAD \nA rich and rewarding story of love\, loss\, and the power of family from the bestselling author of Bad Mother and Love and Other Impossible Pursuits. In the aftermath of a devastating wedding day\, two families\, the Tetherlys and the Copakens\, find their lives unraveled by unthinkable loss. Over the course of the next four summers in Red Hook\, Maine\, they struggle to bridge differences of class and background to honor the memory of the couple\, Becca and John. As Waldman explores the unique and personal ways in which each character responds to the tragedy—from the budding romance between the two surviving children\, Ruthie and Matt\, to the struggling marriage between Iris\, a high strung professor in New York\, and her husband Daniel—she creates a powerful family portrait and a beautiful reminder of the joys of life. Elegantly written and emotionally gripping\, Red Hook Road affirms Waldman’s place among today’s most talented authors. \n

SUMMARY:TSWRJ Play Reading Group
DESCRIPTION:The Playreading Group is calling for Readers for our 2025-26 program. Enthusiasm is the only essential prerequisite. You absolutely do not need a drama background to join in the fun of briefly adopting another persona\, and delivering lines — without the stress and effort of memorizing a part or time-consuming rehearsal. \nOur group focuses on plays of Jewish interest. This season’s theme is JEWISH LIFE IN THE AMERICAN SOUTH\, and the 3 plays we will read are by Jewish men and women. \nSchedule of Readings:\n• Tuesday\, Oct 28\, 2025\, 3:00-5:00 pm: The Little Foxes by Lillian Hellman (1939)\n• Wednesday\, Feb 25\, 2026\, 3:00-5:00 pm: Driving Miss Daisy by Alfred Uhry (1987)\n• Monday April 20\, 2026\, 3:00-5:00 pm: Caroline\, or Change by Tony Kushner (2003) (We’ll tackle selections from this musical.) \nIf you will be able to participate in at least one of the three Readings\, please diarize the dates\, and register\, NOW. Registration: Email Myra Jacobs — myrajacobs@gmail.com. \nCost: $10.00 per person. (covers reproduction costs for a set of copies of the 3 plays)\nPay by check or Venmo to Myra Jacobs who will respond to your registration with payment details. There is no other cost for participation in the Readings. All Temple Sinai members welcome!

SUMMARY:Daytimers with Robert Lieber
DESCRIPTION:United States Foreign Policy In Turbulent Times \nGuest Speaker Robert Lieber\, PhD\, Professor Emeritus of Government and International Affairs\, Georgetown University \nAmerica’s relations with allies and adversaries have displayed a dizzying series of changes. Longtime solidarity with European allies that had been a fixture of the US world role since the creation of NATO has been questioned\, and relations with Asian allies are only slightly less troubled. A rearmed Russia and an increasingly powerful China pose strategic threats\, yet the Trump administration’s policies have been ambivalent toward Moscow and seem to alternate between cooperation and conflict with Beijing. Despite a transactional approach to friends and foes\, the reality is that not only are US national security and vital interests at stake\, but also our values. \nRobert Lieber is Emeritus Professor of Government and International Affairs at Georgetown University\, where he previously served as Chair of the Government Department and interim chair of Psychology. He is author or editor of eighteen books on international relations and U.S. foreign policy\, and his essays and op-eds have appeared in journals and newspapers in the U.S.\, Europe\, and Israel. He also has served as an advisor to several presidential campaigns\, to the State Department\, and to the drafters of U.S. National Intelligence Estimates. His most recent book is INDISPENSABLE NATION: AMERICAN FOREIGN POLICY IN A TURBULENT WORLD (Yale University Press). \nJoin the Temple Sinai DayTimers for a Zoom program to learn more about United States foreign policy. There will be adequate time for questions\, comments\, and discussion following the presentation. \nRegister to join via Zoom
