Registration: Email Myra Jacobs — myrajacobs@gmail.com. \nCost: $10.00 per person. SUMMARY:CIESJ Book Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Join Congregation Ramot Shalom of Be’er Shevah and Temple Sinai of DC for a virtual book discussion of The Hilltop by Assaf Gavron. This book should open up a very intense and significant conversation about issues in contemporary Israel. \nRegister to join via Zoom \n  \nA sprawling\, daring novel\, which dismantles the extreme and absurd reality in the Israeli-occupied West Bank: Catch 22 meets 21st century Israel. Violence\, greed\, lust for power and the blurring of values\, but also a burning ideological passion. As always\, Gavron charts a path between styles and genres\, between realism and satire\, between being earnest and wildly funny. Gavron wrote parts of The Hilltop in a cabin in a settlement in the West Bank.

SUMMARY:TSMRJ Book Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Join the Temple Sinai Brotherhood Book Club at the temple for a discussion of The Genius of Israel: The Surprising Resilience of a Divided Nation in a Turbulent World by Dan Senor and Saul Singer. It’s about how “a small nation of 9 million people\, forced to fight for its existence and security since its founding and (d)riven by ethnic\, religious\, and economic divides\, (proves) resistant to so many of the societal ills plaguing other wealthy democracies.” \nThis book was written before October 7\, 2023\, but released shortly afterward\, so its perspective is not shaped by events since then\, and it may be dated. Either way\, the book should serve as a catalyst for a lively (yet amiable) discussion. Both the Montgomery County Libraries and the DC Libraries have copies available. The Brotherhood welcomes all who are interested in joining the discussion. Contact Howard Oppenheim with questions or to let him know you plan to attend. (Beer\, wine\, coffee\, and snacks are provided.)
