SUMMARY:CIESJ Book Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Join Congregation Ramot Shalom of Be’er Shevah and Temple Sinai of DC on Sunday April 27th at 10am Eastern\, 5pm (17:00) Israel for a discussion of The Third Temple by Yishai  Sarid. Read a little bit about this contemporary novel classified as literature\, sci-fi\, fantasy\, and sometimes even horror. \nWho will rule the holy land\, and at what cost?\nIn a near-future Jerusalem\, harrowing omens plague the city: a desecrated altar\, an unbearable stench\, a rampant famine. Shaken but devout\, Jonathan\, the royal family’s third son\, continues to hold services and offer animal sacrifices at the prophesied Third Temple\, built to consecrate the founding of the new Kingdom of Judah. His father\, Israel’s self-appointed king\, has abolished the Supreme Court. The Torah is the law of the land\, and only people of the Jewish faith are allowed in. When war breaks out and an angel of God begins to torment Jonathan\, warning him of his father’s sacrilege\, the foundations of the young priest’s faith—and then his world—begin to give way. \nWinner of the prestigious Bernstein Prize\, The Third Temple plunges readers into a tempest of fanaticism\, betrayal\, and destruction. Where does the power of man end and the power of God begin?\nWith chilling resonance\, this vivid novel from one of Israel’s leading authors sounds an unforgettable warning amidst rising extremism.\nTranslated by YARDENNE GREENSPAN \nRegister to Join via Zoom\n \nQuestions? Contact Rabbi Melanie Aron.

SUMMARY:CIESJ Program with Prof. Ilai Saltzman
DESCRIPTION:The Undoing Of Israel:  Internal Threats To Israel’s Democracy And Social Cohesion\nProf. Ilai Saltzman\, Director\, Gildenhorn Institute For Israel Studies\, University Of Maryland\n\n\nAt Israel’s founding in 1948\, its founders envisioned a country defined by humanist values and adherence to international law.  Its Declaration of Independence asserted that the state will “ensure complete equality of social and political rights to all its inhabitants irrespective of religion\, race\, or sex.”  But that ideal has always been challenged by the need to protect its Jewish identity\, which has resulted in discrimination against its Arab minority as well as the oppression built into maintaining the occupied territories. \n\n\nOver the decades\, this inherent contradiction has surfaced again and again\, creating political upheavals without ever resolving the contradiction.  Now\, the war in Gaza and the continuing attacks on its judicial system have brought Israel to a breaking point. \n\n\nThis talk will explore Israel’s trajectory toward increasing illiberalism and potential fragmentation that threatens its foundational humanist values as well as offer reforms that could potentially lead to a healing of its divisions. \n\n\nDr. Ilai Saltzman is an Associate Research Professor of Israel Studies\, and the Director of the Gildenhorn Institute for Israel Studies at the University of Maryland\, College Park. His scholarship and teaching are focused on international security\, Israeli foreign and security policy\, US foreign policy\, and political psychology. He has written numerous scholarly articles and book chapters\, and commentaries in the Los Angeles Times\, Ha’aretz\, The Jerusalem Post\, and other prominent outlets. \n\n\nThis program will be recorded but not livestreamed.  A reception will follow. \nRegister

SUMMARY:TSMRJ Book Club
DESCRIPTION:The next book we will discuss is Parable of the Sower by Octavia E Butler. Published in 1993\, it is an “odyssey of one woman who is twice as feeling in a world that has become doubly dehumanized. The time is 2025. The place is California\, where small walled communities must protect themselves from hordes of desperate scavengers and roaming bands of people addicted to a drug that activates” a variety of temptations. The book is generally available in libraries\, but may need to be requested.

SUMMARY:CIESJ Presents: The Use and Misuse of "Antisemitism"
DESCRIPTION:How To Protect Jews Without Sacrificing Our Freedoms\nOver the past several months\, major Jewish organizations have become increasingly alarmed that the important cause of fighting antisemitism has been misappropriated by the federal government to undermine our liberal democratic society — civil rights\, free speech\, inclusive society – as well as attacking higher education. This authoritarianism\, when combined with its white supremacy\, invariably leads to discrimination against women and minorities\, including Jews. \nOur distinguished panel will discuss the key aspects of defining what is and is not antisemitism\, including its use in dealing with anti-Israel protests on college campuses\, elimination of DEI programs and offices of civil rights\, and cancelling funding for universities. \nOur panel includes Rabbi David Saperstein\, former Director of the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism and former U.S. Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom; Judith Lichtman\, attorney\, life-long leader in advocating for women’s rights\, and a founder of Emily’s List; and Arno Rosenfeld\, an enterprise reporter for The Forward with a focus on antisemitism and its relationship to activism against Israel. \n\n\n A reception will follow for in-person attendees. Livestream information will be sent via confirmation email. \nRegister
