SUMMARY:Book Talk Breakfast with Claire Lerner: Big Reactors
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special workshop with Claire Lerner\, author of the new book Big Reactors: Practical Strategies for Parenting Highly Sensitive Children. Drawing on more than 35 years of hands-on work with children and families\, Claire will: \n\nDescribe the key traits and challenges of highly sensitive kids\nReveal the process—the “detective work”—she guides parents through to understand the root cause of their child’s challenges and to come up with sensitive\, effective strategies that work in real life\, not just in theory.\nProvide a reality-based roadmap for how parents and other caregivers can find solutions to their unique experiences with their extraordinary kids that take into consideration that every child and family is different\, and that there is not a one-size-fits-all approach.\n\nThe session will include ample time for Q&A. \nRSVP here \nExcerpts from the book can be found here. \n  \nAbout Claire Lerner\nClaire is a nationally recognized child development and parenting expert with more than three decades of experience in education and direct practice. Claire partners with parents to decode their children’s behavior and solve their most vexing childrearing challenges. She also trains pediatric residents in child development and parenting\, and provides mental health consultation at DC area preschools. In addition to her clinical work with families\, Claire led the parenting division of Zero to Three for nearly 20 years\, translating the science of early childhood for parents. Claire is the author of hundreds of parenting resources\, including blogs\, podcasts\, videos.

SUMMARY:CIESJ Presents: Israel at a Crossroads: A Conversation on Security & Peace
DESCRIPTION:Temple Sinai’s Committee for Israel and Social Justice is pleased to invite you to an evening with Maj. Gen. (ret.) Nimrod Sheffer\, one of Israel’s most respected military strategists. Sheffer will be in conversation with Natan Guttman\, Washington correspondent for Kan public television and columnist for Moment Magazine. \nDrawing on decades of senior military leadership\, Sheffer will offer a clear-eyed assessment of Israel’s legitimate security needs and the realities it must confront. At the same time\, he will present a hopeful\, pragmatic vision for a future of peace\, grounded in his belief that a two-state solution remains necessary and achievable. The conversation will explore concrete strategies for advancing security alongside diplomacy\, rebuilding trust\, strengthening Israel’s democracy\, and charting a path toward a safer\, more just future for Israelis and Palestinians alike. \nMaj. Gen. (ret.) Nimrod Sheffer has devoted more than 45 years to the security of the State of Israel. Rising through the ranks of the Israeli Air Force\, he later served as Deputy Commander of the Air Force. His final role in the IDF was as Head of the Planning Directorate of the General Staff\, overseeing political-strategic military planning\, international military cooperation\, and long-term force development. Following his retirement from active duty\, Sheffer was appointed President and CEO of Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI). Alongside his career\, Sheffer has long been engaged in civic and social efforts\, including partnership initiatives with Bedouin communities in the Negev to foster opportunity\, leadership\, and shared citizenship. \nRegister \nThis is an in-person only event. A reception will follow the discussion. \nThe event is co-sponsored by J Street\, New Israel Fund\, New Jewish Narrative\, and UnXeptable.

SUMMARY:YAWS Meeting
DESCRIPTION:We are a group of parents of young adults and teens who are struggling with life. Examples of such difficulties might be: isolation\, social difficulties\, school avoidance\, school failure or other learning differences\, vocational struggles\, inhibitions around launching and independence or strained relations with friends and family. Many struggle with mental illness\, learning disabilities\, Asperger’s\, substance abuse or autism. Some are undiagnosed\, just not living up to society’s expectations. \n\n\nWe meet once a month and support and encourage one another as we look at strategies for helping our young adults. We understand the journey\, which has many twists and turns\, often not what we expected when thinking about raising a child. We laugh\, cry\, share resources\, and support one another. Occasionally\, we have speakers join us and supplement our knowledge of resources available\, including housing options\, legal remedies\, new medications or treatments\, etc. \n\nThe group meets monthly and is open to anyone interested. All information shared is completely confidential. Should you have any questions\, please call the Temple Sinai office at (202) 363-6394.

SUMMARY:Daytimers with Elizabeth Prelinger
DESCRIPTION:The Exhibition of Degenerate Art\, Munich 1937: Lessons for Today\nTemple member Elizabeth Prelinger will present a 45-minute slide and video lecture on the “Degenerate Art Exhibition\,” which was first shown in Munich in 1937 before traveling around Germany. Organized by the propaganda wing of the Nazi party\, the show looted the best works of modern art of the era from museums and private collections\, labeling them as the creations of the mentally ill\, Bolsheviks\, and Jews. Liberal directors who had enriched Germany’s museums with these pieces were fired from their positions. The show marked an important stage in the Fascist claws on all means of cultural production in order to subjugate and manipulate the hearts and minds of the people. And this was just the beginning. \nSound familiar? \nThis is a hybrid program. Register to join in person or virtually. \n\nElizabeth Prelinger is Keyser Family Professor of Art History Emerita from Georgetown University. She has published and curated exhibitions on such artists as Edvard Munch\, Käthe Kollwitz\, and Paul Gauguin. Liz and her husband Steve Messner have been members of Temple Sinai for almost thirty years and their grandson has just started at the Nursery School.
