In this session, we’ll listen to a variety of secular songs and explore their connections to Judaism and Jewish values. What role does secular music play in Reform Jewish life? Can a song that wasn’t written as a prayer still feel sacred? We’ll discuss these questions and more and discover how music can inspire, challenge, and deepen our Jewish experience.

Emily Groff Heilborn is a music educator, songwriter, and worship leader based in the Washington, D.C. area. She serves as the Education and Ritual Music Specialist at Temple Sinai, where she works with the Nursery School, Religious School, teen programming, the MMC (Adult Band), worship services, and more. Her original music, including her debut EP Breathe, is sung in synagogues, camps, and Jewish communities across the country. As an artist-in-residence and teen songleading instructor, Emily has brought her music, teaching, and leadership to congregations and camps throughout the eastern United States. Originally from Miami Beach, she now lives in Silver Spring, MD, with her husband and their two corgis.
