Tuesday Adult Class: Judaism in America at 250

In honor of America’s Semiquincentennial, we will study a variety of sources and topics related to Judaism and Jewish life in America since its founding. We will start with a series of studies called “The Talmud of America,” examining the root texts in Jewish sources for core concepts from the Declaration of Independence, including “all men are created equal” and “prudence and the right of rebellion.”

We will study sections from American Judaism by Jonathan Sarna and examine some critical moments in the development of Judaism in America, like the founding of Reconstructionist Judaism and American contributions to Jewish literature and culture more broadly through writers like Philip Roth, musicians like Debbie Friedman and others.

The class meets twice each month on the first and third Tuesdays beginning after Simchat Torah and continuing through Spring 2027. If you have questions, email Helena Goldstein.
